From Royan to Bordeaux, along the Gironde estuary

Royan, a lively seaside resort, is a nice starting point. Its “Belle Époque” villas, its port and its town center are worth the detour. The cycle path takes you along pretty beaches and plaice fishing huts and takes you through remarkable villages such as Talmont-sur-Gironde, classified as “Most beautiful village in France” or Mortagne-sur-Gironde and its charming port . After Mortagne, you cycle through the heart of bucolic vineyards and through small marinas. Blaye, with its Vauban citadel, is a remarkable stopover. Two choices are available to you to reach Bordeaux:

  • cross the estuary thanks to the ferry to pedal in the Médoc and its great wine appellations
  • continue along the north bank passing through Bourg and Saint-André-de-Cubazac and discover a small part of the Dordogne

From Bordeaux to Agen: the charm of the south-west

You leave Bordeaux by the pretty Roger-Labépie track (built on an old railway line), which takes you to Créon. This beautiful medieval town with its central square in Arcades and its old fortified bastide is worth a visit. The route continues by discovering pretty villages, a rich heritage (abbeys, churches, bastides…), the vineyards of Entre-deux-Mers before reaching the Canal lateral de la Garonne at La Réole.

It is now mainly along the towpath that the route continues. Take advantage of a peaceful setting, dedicated to river tourism and “green activities” to travel with complete peace of mind. Stop off to do one of the many water activities, visit the perched village of Meilhan-sur-Garonne, escape to Marmande, discover the incredible village of Mas-d’Agenais or the pretty bastide town of Damazan. The arrival in Agen is via one of the largest canal bridges in France (600 m). The prune capital has a magnificent historical heritage and a lively city center.
